How is the Mars rover Opportunity still alive? In 2004 the rovers Spirit and Opportunity touched down on the Red Planet and began journeys that were each expected to last about 90 days. Both rovers lived exponentially longer than expected, and in fact, Opportunity is still going strong in 2016. Could electrostatic cleanings via the electrified Martian wind be responsible for the rovers' extraordinary long-livedness?

Marswagen Opportunity gaat 'Vallei der Volharding' in
De Amerikaanse Marswagen Opportunity, die al sinds januari 2004 rondrijdt op de Rode Planeet, staat op het punt om Perseverance Valley ('Vallei der Volharding') binnen te gaan. Opportunity heeft de afgelopen tweeënhalf jaar doorgebracht in de omgeving van Cape Tribulation, waar aanvullende aanwijzingen zijn gevonden voor een nat verleden van Mars. Belangrijkste doel van het onderzoek van Perseverance Valley is de ontstaanswijze van deze vallei te achterhalen: stromend water, puinlawines, of winderosie. Opportunity heeft tot nu toe 44,7 kilometer afgelegd op Mars. (GS)
