De ijzige dwergplaneet Pluto is mogelijk ontstaan door het samenklonteren van pakweg één miljard kometen die qua samenstelling veel leken op de Rosetta-komeet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Die conclusie trekken planeetonderzoekers van het Southwest Research Institute in een publicatie in vakblad Icarus. Pluto is in de zomer van 2015 van nabij onderzocht door de Amerikaanse ruimtesonde New Horizons. Die ontdekte onder andere een gigantische vlakte van bevroren stikstof (Sputnik Planitia). De hoeveelheid koolmonoxide aan het oppervlak van Pluto was daarentegen relatief gering. Op basis van metingen en modelberekeningen komen de onderzoekers nu tot de conclusie dat die chemische samenstelling goed te begrijpen is wanneer Pluto een soort superkomeet is. De oorspronkelijke chemische samenstelling zou beïnvloed zijn geweest door vloeibaar water, vermoedelijk in een ondergrondse oceaan.
New Horizons toonden de mensheid niet alleen hoe Pluto eruit ziet, maar verschaften ook informatie over de samenstelling van Pluto's atmosfeer en oppervlak. Deze kaarten - samengesteld met behulp van gegevens van het Ralph-instrument - geven regio's aan die rijk zijn aan methaan (CH4), stikstof (N2), koolstofmonoxide (CO) en water (H2O) -ijs. Sputnik Planitia vertoont een bijzonder sterke handtekening van stikstof nabij de evenaar. Wetenschappers van SwRI combineerden deze gegevens met de 67T-gegevens van Rosetta in de komeet om een voorgesteld "gigantisch komeet" -model voor Pluto-vorming te ontwikkelen.
