Saturn, close detail
Saturn's atmosphere and its rings are shown here in a false color composite made from Cassini images taken in near infrared light through filters that sense different amounts of methane gas. The complex feature with arms and secondary extensions just above and to the right of center is called the Dragon Storm. Portions of the atmosphere with a large abundance of methane above the clouds are red, indicating clouds that are deep in the atmosphere. Grey indicates high clouds, and brown indicates clouds at intermediate altitudes. The Dragon Storm was a powerful source of radio emissions during July and September of 2004.

Hot Coronal Loops on the Sun
Scientists discovered an important clue for solving the long-standing mystery of the hot solar atmosphere while observing coronal loops in unprecedented detail. New observations reveal the location of the unidentified energy source, showing that most of the heating occurs low in the corona, within about 10,000 miles from the Sun's visible surface. Millions of different-sized arches, called coronal loops, comprise the corona. These observations show that most of the heating must occur at the bases of the coronal loops, near where they emerge from and return to the solar surface.

Crab Nebula Composite
A composite image showing the X-ray (blue), and optical (red) images of the Crab Nebula superimposed, reveals an inside the "shell" view. The size of the X-ray image is smaller because the higher energy X-ray emitting electrons radiate away their energy more quickly than the lower energy optically emitting electrons.

Hot, Young Stars Form In Cone Nebula
The Cone Nebula is being slowly eaten away by ultraviolet radiation from young, hot stars which are located beyond the top of the image. The nebula which stretches seven light years in length is an immense pillar of gas and dust located some 2,500 light years away toward the constellation Monoceros. Knots and filaments on the surface of the pillar are formed as the surface of the pillar heated by the hot stars boils away.

Red Supergiant Monocerotis
An image of Nebula V838 Mon located 20,000 light years away toward the constellation Monoceros, shows a glowing cloud of dust and gas surrounding a nova-like variable star. The nebula is seen illuminated by the red eruptive variable star near the center of the image. Light from this eruption produced an excellent example of a "light echo". The star "erupted" or "flashed in 2002, reflecting a surrounding cloud of gas and dust toward Earth.

Black Eye Galaxy "Smarts"
Galaxy Messier 64, a spiral galaxy located 17 million light years away toward the constellation Coma Berenices, is marked by a dark band of obscuring dust covering part of the bright nucleus of the galaxy. The galaxy's unusual appearance has given rise to its nicknames as the "Black Eye" or "Evil Eye" galaxy. Motion of gas and dust in the outer regions of the galaxy rotate opposite gas and dust within it's the inner regions.

Earthrise as seen from Moon
In this series, which was taken from Apollo 11 while in lunar orbit, 20 July 1969, a cloud-covered Earth appears to rise above the surface of the moon. The entire continent of Australia is visible, as is the western Pacific Ocean, eastern Asia, and the Arctic.

Venus, hemispherical view
The hemispheric view of Venus, as revealed by more than a decade of radar investigations culminating in the 1990-1994 Magellan mission, is centered at 180 degrees east longitude. The composite image was processed to improve contrast and to emphasize small features, and was color-coded to represent elevation. Gaps in the elevation data from the Magellan radar altimeter were filled with altimetry from the Venera spacecraft and the U.S. Pioneer Venus missions

Spiral Galaxies Dance
Two spiral galaxies, the larger NGC 2207 on the left, and the smaller one, IC 2163 on the right, fling out stars and gas into long streamers extending 100,000 light-years toward the right-hand edge of the picture. Strong gravitational forces from NGC 2207 have distorted the original shape of its smaller dance partner. When the dance ends, billions of years from now, the two galaxies will become one.
