Space pictures

That's one small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind, dat waren de woorden van Neill Armstrong toen hij zijn eerste stap op de maan zette.

Only the Huge Die Young .

This young, glittering cluster of stars is surrounded by clouds of interstellar gas and dust—the raw material for new star formation. The nebula, located 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina, contains a central cluster of huge, hot stars called NGC 3603. Ultraviolet radiation and violent stellar winds have blown out an enormous cavity in the surrounding gas and dust, providing an unobstructed view of the cluster within.

Although most of these stars were born around the same time, they differ greatly in size and include some of the most massive stars known. These huge stars live fast and die young, burning through their hydrogen fuel quickly and ultimately ending their lives in supernova explosions. This Hubble image combines visible and infrared data.

You’d Be Smiling Too .

This week we celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of Johan Gottfried Galle, a German astronomer who, in 1846, became the first person to observe Neptune and know it was a planet. Prompted by calculations made by Urbain Leverrier, and aided by Heinrich Louis d’Arrest, Galle identified the planet where Leverrier calculated it would be. Neptune is thus unique because it is the first planet whose existence was predicted before it was observed. Galle also discovered three comets, compiled a catalogue of 414 comets, and proposed a method of accurately calculating the distance to the Sun. Galle, who lived to 98, was honored by having two craters named after him. One is on the Moon, and the other is the famous “smiley face” crater in the Argyre region of Mars, seen here on its side.

Starry, Starry Night The docked space shuttle Endeavour, backdropped by a nighttime view of Earth and a starry sky, is featured in this image photographed by NASA astronaut Greg Chamitoff, STS-134 mission specialist, while at the International Space Station. The image was captured on May 28, 2011, during Endeavour’s final mission in space. Lights in Endeavour’s cargo bay illuminate the shuttle, while city lights cast an eerie glow on Earth, 350 kilometers (220 miles) below.

During this long-exposure photograph, the relative motion of the space shuttle is apparent as it streaks around Earth at 28,000 kilometers per hour (17,500 miles per hour). The stars, located approximately in Endeavour’s line of motion, appear nearly point-like. STS-134 was the penultimate mission of the shuttle program.

All Eyes on Carina Eta Carinae is one of the most massive and brightest stars in the Milky Way, about 100 times as massive and a million times as bright as the Sun. This famed variable hypergiant star (upper center) is surrounded by the Carina Nebula. This composite image combines visible data from the Digital Sky Survey (in blue), near-infrared data from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (in green), and infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope (in red).

Areas that appear blue are not obscured by dust, while areas that appear red are hidden behind dark clouds of dust in visible light. A study combining X-ray and infrared observations has revealed a new population of massive stars lurking within, suggesting that the Carina Nebula will produce twice as many supernova explosions as earlier supposed.

No Rookies This Time .

History was made fifteen years ago this week when, for the first time in NASA history, the exact same crew and payload were flown on a repeat mission. In April 1997, the STS-83 mission, with three space rookies aboard, ended prematurely (after just three days) due to a failed fuel cell. But NASA kept its primary payload, the first Microgravity Science Laboratory, loaded in Columbia’s cargo bay, refurbished the spacecraft, and managed to relaunch the mission just three months later. Renumbered STS-94, Columbia and its crew of seven (all of whom could claim space veteran status now) spent a full sixteen days in orbit evaluating equipment racks for future use in the International Space Station, and testing materials and combustion properties in zero gravity.

Long-Exposure Lagoon The constellation Sagittarius lies in the direction of the center of our Milky Way galaxy, the thickest, densest region of stars and deep sky objects anywhere. One of the larger objects here is the Lagoon Nebula (M8), an emission nebula that appears as wide as three full Moons side by side. M8 is a stellar nursery, where new stars are forming out of a collapsing cloud of hydrogen.

The infrared radiation from these young stars ionizes the gas, causing it to glow. Visible in binoculars on a clear night as a pale grey cloud, M8 reveals its true colors in long-exposure photographs like this one by R. Jay GaBany. Jay collected a total of forty-five hours of data with a digital imager attached to a remote-controlled half-meter (twenty-inch) diameter Ritchey-Chrétien telescope located in New Mexico.

Polar Pioneer.

Launched five years ago this week, the Phoenix Mars Lander made the first successful landing in the Martian north polar region. Phoenix confirmed and examined deposits of underground water ice detected by the Mars Odyssey orbiter, and identified a mineral called calcium carbonate that suggested occasional presence of thawed water. Phoenix also found soil chemistry with significant implications for life, and observed falling snow.

The mission’s biggest surprise was the discovery of perchlorate, an oxidizing chemical on Earth that is food for some microbes and potentially toxic for others. Not surprisingly, during its first Martian winter, excessive loads of ice formed on the lander and collapsed its two huge solar panels (one of which is seen above), effectively ending the mission.

Free Enterprise Before the space shuttle could make its first flight into space, NASA needed to test the spacecraft’s ability to glide to a landing on a runway. During 1977, the Approach and Landing Test program put the shuttle Enterprise through its paces. Never designed for flight in space, Enterprise was an atmospheric test vehicle that made several captive flights attached to the top of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a converted Boeing 747.

Thirty-five years ago this week, Enterprise, outfitted with an aerodynamic tail cone, made its first free-flight, as astronauts Gordon Fullerton and Fred Haise piloted Enterprise on a 5 minute, 21 second glide. Enterprise completed four more glide tests, the final two of which did not use the tail cone, simulating the actual configuration of an orbiter returning from space.

Sisterhood in Space In 1962, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel in space, but the door to cosmic gender equity was slow in opening. Nearly twenty years passed before another woman, Svetlana Savitskaya, orbited Earth on an historic mission that began thirty years ago this week. During a later 1984 mission to the Salyut space station, Savitskaya became the first woman to walk in space, and is still the only Soviet/Russian woman to do so.

Worldwide, male astronauts still outnumber females, despite numerous examples of women who have the right stuff, like Peggy Whitson, who currently holds the U.S. record for most time in space at more than 376 days over six missions. Whitson, commander of the ISS Expedition 16 crew, is seen here during a seven-hour space walk in 2007.

Prachtige foto van mysterieuze Pijpnevel.

Afbeelding

This week marks the fiftieth anniversary of one of the world’s leading astronomical research institutions, the European Southern Observatory, whose member nations include Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. ESO operates some of the world’s largest and most advanced observational facilities at three sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal, and Chajnantor. This wide-field view of the Orion Nebula, lying about 1,350 light-years away, was taken with the 4.1-meter (161-inch) VISTA infrared telescope at ESO’s Paranal Observatory. VISTA’s huge field of view captures the whole nebula and its surroundings in a single frame.
