Solar Update
Good morning. Below is an updated image of the visible solar disk on Sunday. Solar activity during the past 24 hours was low. A number of minor C-Class flares were observed around various regions, including a C6.4 near the NW limb at 08:13 UTC (see video below). A coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed following the event in LASCO C2 imagery, but appears to be headed mostly to the west and away from Earth. New spot growth was seen just to the north of region 2035 within the past 12 hours. New flux emergence was also observed within regions 2034, 2038 and 2044. All other visible regions, including 2036, remain fairly stable for the time being. An M-Class event will remain a possibility during the next 24 hours. Stay Tuned to SolarHam.com for the latest information.

CME Impact!
Ground based magnetometers detected a deviation in ground current Sunday morning at 10:57 UTC and this signaled the passage of an incoming coronal mass ejection (CME) past our planet. Solar wind speeds as measured by the ACE Spacecraft also increased to above 700 km/s, the same speed originally predicted by the WSA-Enlil Solar Wind model. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) initially pointed north, however it could eventually swing south in the wake of an impact. Minor (G1) geomagnetic storming is now being observed at high latitudes. Stay tuned for the latest updates.

UPDATE at 19:40 UTC: Minor storm conditions have since subsided. Despite a solar wind stream remaining near 700 km/s, the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has so far failed to point south for a long duration, a condition that is known to suppress geomagnetic activity. Sky watchers tonight should remain alert this evening as a sudden change in the IMF could help intensify storming at high latitudes.

Eruptive Limb
The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) provided us with a front row seat to multiple eruptive events off the northwest limb during the past couple of days. This full disk inverted video using the 304 angstroms channel shows at least 5 eruptions off the limb (top right in video). A number of coronal mass ejections were seen leaving the area in coronagraph imagery, but were each directed away from our planet due to the non geoeffective position. Enjoy the show!

SUMMARY: 10cm Radio Burst
Begin Time: 2014 Apr 25 0020 UTC
Maximum Time: 2014 Apr 25 0021 UTC
End Time: 2014 Apr 25 0025 UTC
Duration: 5 minutes
Peak Flux: 1100 sfu
Latest Penticton Noon Flux: 130 sfu
Description: A 10cm radio burst indicates that the electromagnetic burst associated with a solar flare at the 10cm wavelength was double or greater than the initial 10cm radio background. This can be indicative of significant radio noise in association with a solar flare. This noise is generally short-lived but can cause interference for sensitive receivers including radar, GPS, and satellite communications.

Solar Update
Good morning. Below is an updated image of the visible solar disk on Friday. Solar activity during the past 24 hours reached high levels thanks to an unexpected X1.3 solar flare around region 2035, now located behind the west limb. A bright coronal mass ejection (CME) became visible soon after in LASCO coronagraph imagery, however due to the location behind the west limb, it was directed away from Earth. A few C-Class flares were detected Friday morning around 2035 as it continues to rotate further behind the limb. All remaining visible sunspot regions are either stable or in a state of decay. Solar activity is expected to decline to lower levels this weekend. Stay tuned to SolarHam.com for the latest space weather news and information.

X1.3 Solar Flare Detected
A major solar flare measuring X1.3 was observed at 00:27 UTC around region 2035, now located behind the west limb. Because the blast took place beyond the west limb, any associated coronal mass ejection (CME) will be directed away from our planet. More details to follow. Click HERE to view an updated event log.

CME Update: A bright coronal mass ejection (CME) is seen leaving the blast site in the latest LASCO C2 imagery. Unfortunately for sky watchers, the plasma cloud is directed away from our planet and should have minimal impact on our geomagnetic field. Click HERE for an image.

Solar Update / Growing Flare Threat
Good morning. Here is an updated look at the visible solar disk on Saturday. Solar activity is currently at low levels with a number of C-Class flares observed, including a long duration C5.3 at 06:08 UTC. A coronal mass ejection (CME) became visible in the latest LASCO C2 imagery soon after the event, but appears to be directed to the west. The source of this activity, region 2051 in the southwest quadrant, maintains a complex Beta-Gamma-Delta magnetic configuration and has the potential to produce an isolated M-Class flare. Elsewhere, region 2047 did show some signs of decay during the past 24 hours, but will remain a threat for at least C-Class solar flares. In the southeast quadrant, region 2052 continued in a gradual growth phase, but has remain fairly quiet up until this point. All other regions, including 2049, remain stable for now. Stay tuned to SolarHam.com for the latest space weather news and information.

Solar Update
Good morning. Below is an updated look at the visible solar disk on Tuesday morning. Solar activity reached moderate levels thanks to an M1.8 solar flare around departing region 2051 at 09:03 UTC. A coronal mass ejection may be associated with the flare, however updated coronagraph imagery is still needed to confirm. More details on this later this morning. Region 2051 was also responsible for a minor C7.1 flare at 04:32 UTC. All other visible regions remains fairly stable for the time being. Old region 2034 continues to rotate back into Earth view and was renumbered 2056 overnight. There will remain a chance for at least C-Class solar flares today and perhaps another isolated M-Class event. Stay tuned to SolarHam.com for the latest information.

Departing Solar Flare
A long duration M-Flare peaking at M1.8 was observed Tuesday morning around departing region 2051 at 09:03 UTC. If a coronal mass ejection (CME) is associated, it would likely be directed mostly away from our planet. More details to follow if necessary.

UPDATE: A noteworthy CME was not associated with this event. Only a very narrow release of plasma was observed in LASCO C2 imagery.

Net de reden weer geconstateerd op Solarham;

M5.2 Solar Flare
A moderately strong solar flare measuring M5.2 was just observed around sunspot 2056 peaking at 10:07 UTC. The event was associated with a 10cm radio burst (TenFlare) measuring 390 solar flux units and lasting 8 minutes. Updated coronagraph imagery shows that a coronal mass ejection (CME) was not associated with this event. You can track this event using the updated Event Tracker

Aurora Show
A weak transient passage Wednesday evening, followed by a prolonged period of southward Bz, helped to increase geomagnetic activity at high latitudes. Our friend Zoltan Kenwell located in Alberta, Canada captured the great image below during a peak in activity. "Another beautiful night on the Alberta prairies. 30 km NE of Edmonton. A chilly -4 with very little wind. A few clouds moved about but nothing to serious. This was a very slow moving display which touched both West and East horizons. Fantastic overhead show!"

Farsided Eruption Observed
Attached video below captures a large eruption Thursday night behind the west limb, along with a bright coronal mass ejection (CME). STEREO Ahead imagery is currently limited, however the source of the event may have been region 2051, now transiting the farside of the sun. The eruption was associated with Type II and IV radio emissions (also known as sweep frequency events), but because this was a farsided occurrence, it will have minimal to no impact on our planet. Solar bijwerken
Goedemorgen.
