The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (retitled Holy Blood, Holy Grail in the United States) is a controversial book by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln. The book was first published in 1982 by Jonathan Cape in London, as an unofficial follow-up to three BBC TV documentaries, part of the Chronicle series. One of the books, according to the authors, which influenced the project was L'Or de Rennes (later re-published as Le Trésor Maudit), a 1967 book by Gérard de Sède, with the collaboration of Gast1 Plantard.
The Rennes-le-Chateau pentacle of mountains was first brought to public attention in the last of the BBC Chronicle films that Henry Lincoln made on the subject, "The Shadow of the Templars," broadcast in 1979. One viewer, David Wood, was able to use his skills as a surveyor to push beyond Henry Lincoln's initial discovery and reveal the beginnings of what has turned out to be a vast temple of geometrical figures in the landscape of the Aude Valley. Wood subsequently published his own book "Genisis" (Baton Press 1985). His discoveries prompted Lincoln to investigate the geometry further himself, revealing the most amazing designs and correlations and supported by facts and figures (as laid out in "The Holy Place", Cape 1991, Corgi 1992). More recently, the geometry was explored in a book called "The Tomb of God" (Andrews/Schellenberger Little Brown, 1996).
When it became known that the inference of the authors was that the body of Jesus was buried beneath Mount Cardou, a few kilometers from Rennes-le-Chateau, media hostility ensued. This culminated in an extraordinary television discrediting of Andrews and Schellengerger by BBC's Timewatch, which simultaneously also dragged down Lincoln's geometry upon which their conclusions had been drawn, with the result that many people have since subscribed to the same line of thought and not given the existence of the geometry the credence it deserves.
