Radiotelescopen brengen hogesnelheidswolken gedetailleerd in kaart
Met grote radiotelescopen in Australië (Parkes) en Duitsland (Effelsberg) is de meest gedetailleerde kaart ooit samengesteld van de verdeling van zogeheten hogesnelheidswolken. Dat zijn wolken van koel neutraal waterstofgas die met snelheden van enkele honderden kilometers per seconde naar ons toe of van ons af bewegen. Tientallen jaren lang is de ware aard van deze wolken onbekend geweest. Inmiddels staat vast dat ze zich op relatief kleine afstand van ons eigen Melkwegstelsel bevinden: minder dan ca. 30.000 lichtjaar. Vermoedelijk gaat het om gas dat door supernova-explosies het Melkwegstelsel wordt uitgeblazen en vervolgens weer terugvalt. Op basis van de nieuwe gedetailleerde kaart, gepubliceerd in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, hopen sterrenkundigen meer over de wolken te weten te komen. (GS)
