Space pictures

That's one small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind, dat waren de woorden van Neill Armstrong toen hij zijn eerste stap op de maan zette. De ruimte en het universum interesseren ons allemaal, vind hier alles terug over ons zonnestelstel, de NASA, geplande ruimte missies en andere gebeurtenissen die ons allemaal aangaan.

Traveling at 17,500 miles per hour (5 miles per second)…we orbit the Earth every 90 minutes, with a sunrise or sunset every 45 minutes. So half of our space walk is in complete darkness. The helmet lights are essential at the work sight. Here I am getting the bail drive lever ready for my arch nemesis…the ‘M3 Ammonia Connector’. The dance begins (8-14-2010). Round and Round They Go The fact that stars appear to be fixed in their positions in the night sky is partly the result of our relatively short life spans. All stars are in motion, most of them imperceptibly, but over time and with increasingly sophisticated observational tools it has become possible to map just where and how fast the stars are moving. Dutch astronomer Jacobus Kapteyn, born 160 years ago this week, devoted considerable effort to measuring the proper motion of stars, and he found that most were not traveling randomly, as had been thought, but were heading in one of two opposing directions. Kapteyn’s analysis provided some of the earliest evidence for the rotation of our galaxy. Seen here is NGC 2903, a rotating barred spiral galaxy slightly smaller than our own, 30 million light-years away.

How Far the Moon? Launched forty years ago this week, Apollo 14 became the third mission to land astronauts on the Moon. While Stuart Roosa orbited the Moon in the Command Module Kitty Hawk, Alan Shepard (above) and Edgar Mitchell descended to the surface in the Lunar Module Antares. One important piece of equipment they deployed was the Laser Ranging Retro Reflector (LR3), a grid of 100 reflecting cubes that became a target for scientists on Earth, who bounced powerful laser beams off its reflective surface. By measuring the time it takes the laser beam to make the round trip, scientists can calculate the distance to the Moon to an accuracy of mere inches. Similar LR3s were left by the Apollo 11 and 15 astronauts, and they represent the only Apollo experiments that are still in use today.

Destiny Fulfilled This unique off-axis view of the International Space Station reveals the extent of its growth in three dimensions after just two years in orbit. From front to back, the Destiny laboratory is followed by the Unity node, the Zarya module, and the Zvezda module. Solar panels extend left and right from Zarya and Zvezda. Rising above the Unity node is the base of the P6 solar array, whose accordian-like radiators are visible at the top of the image. The Destiny laboratory is twenty-eight feet long and has a pressurized volume of nearly 4,000 cubic feet. The laboratory’s interior is designed to accommodate a total of twenty-four racks of scientific or support equipment. The space shuttle Atlantis delivered Destiny to the ISS during the seven-day STS-98 mission, which began ten years ago this week.

Stellar Sardines Globular clusters are compact groups of stars around the core of our galaxy. Omega Centauri, one of the most famous clusters, is comprised primarily of older stars between 10 and 20 billion years old, but a recent Hubble Space Telescope image has shed new light on these ancient suns. Employing its new Wide Field Camera 3, Hubble imaged just a fraction of the 10 million or so stars that comprise this cluster 16,000 light-years from Earth. The stars are packed about thirteen times closer than the Sun and its nearest neighbor, Alpha Centauri. If Earth were located here, our night sky would appear 100 times brighter. Younger stars appear yellow and white; older stars are orange or red; blue stars are old stars that have collided or merged with other stars, boosting their energy-production rate.

Looks Can Be Deceiving What appears to be a peaceful scene of cosmic tranquility is in fact a massive, chaotic star-forming region known as R136. This stellar nursery is part of the 30 Doradus Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy about 170,000 light-years away. R136 is larger and more prolific than any known star-forming region in our own Milky Way Galaxy. Many of the diamond-like icy blue stars seen here are among the most massive stars known. Several of them are over 100 times more massive than our Sun. These hefty stars are destined to pop off, like a string of firecrackers, as supernovas in a few million years. In this image, the blue color is light from the hottest, most massive stars; the green is from the glow of oxygen; and the red is from fluorescing hydrogen.

Trouble Ahead The Gemini VIII mission began with a successful launch forty-five years ago this week, but astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott faced a life-threatening emergency just six hours later. Moments after docking with the previously-launched Agena target vehicle—the first orbital docking of two spacecraft in history—the two joined spacecraft began rolling uncontrollably. Suspecting the Agena was to blame, the crew undocked from it, but the situation only worsened. One of Gemini’s thrusters was firing unchecked, and without the added mass of the Agena, the smaller Gemini was now rolling once per second. The astronauts managed to shut off the faulty thruster and gain control using Gemini’s reentry thrusters. This quick thinking forced an early but safe end to a very dangerous flight.

Half a Year on Mir The Russian Mir space station appears to float in front of the cloud-blanketed Earth in this view from the space shuttle Atlantis, which was launched on the STS-76 mission fifteen years ago this week. STS-76, the third Shuttle-Mir docking mission, saw the two spacecraft connected in orbit for five days. When Atlantis undocked at the end of that time, it was one astronaut lighter: Shannon Lucid remained on Mir for what was supposed to be a 140-day stay as Mir’s first American woman researcher. Lucid’s ride home, STS-79, was delayed twice because of solid rocket motor replacements and two Florida hurricanes, and she ended up spending six months in orbit—a record for women that was not surpassed until 2007 when Sunita Williams flew on the ISS Expedition 15 crew.

Veil Unveiled Some five to eight thousand years ago, a star exploded in the constellation Cygnus. We don’t know how bright the star was, how long it was visible, or what impact its appearance had on those humans who witnessed it. We do know that the supernova created an energetic shock wave that has expanded, causing the interstellar medium it comes in contact with to glow. A compact circular nebula likely formed right after the explosion, but thousands of years of expansion have turned it into a diffuse, sprawling remnant that now covers an area six times the width of the full Moon. The Veil Nebula, as it is known today, is so diffuse that its isolated components are each given a different designation. Shown here is NGC 6992, also known as the Eastern Veil, one of the largest intact portions of the nebula.

Scouting Odyssey Ten years ago this week, the Mars 2001 Odyssey orbiter began its six-month journey to Mars. Odyssey then spent several months grazing the Martian atmosphere (a fuel-saving process known as aerobraking) to circularize its path into a two-hour mapping orbit. Mars Odyssey examines the composition of the planet’s surface, looks for water and shallow buried ice, and studies the radiation environment of Mars. Odyssey completed its primary mission in 2004 but continues to uncover surprises (like caves on Mars) and support other Mars missions. Mission planners are relying on imagery from Odyssey to help choose a possible 2012 landing site for Curiosity, the roving Mars Science Laboratory. One possible location is Holden Crater, seen in this false-color Odyssey image.
