Magellan Turns up the Stereo Launched in 1989, the Magellan spacecraft was the first new American planetary exploration mission in over a decade. Magellan entered orbit around Venus in 1990 and began using its radar to pierce the clouds that perpetually shroud our nearest planetary neighbor. By early 1992, Magellan had completed two mapping cycles covering nearly the entire globe.

Its third mapping cycle, which began twenty years ago this week, was dedicated in part to collecting data for stereo images of the surface and filling in areas of previously missing data. By mission’s end in 1994, Magellan had mapped ninety-eight percent of Venus, and created thousands of three-dimensional views, like this half of a stereo pair of images of the lowland plains in the Sedna Planitia region.

Lunar Orbiter Liftoff In 1966 and 1967, NASA sent five robotic Lunar Orbiter spacecraft to the Moon to create high-resolution photographic maps of the lunar surface to aid in selecting future Apollo landing sites. The images from the Lunar Orbiters arrived at Earth in a unique way: a camera took the photographs, an automatic photo lab on board developed the film using traditional darkroom techniques (modified for the weightlessness of space), and a fax machine scanned the resulting prints and radioed them back to Earth.

This created high-resolution strips of images that were then pieced together to form wide-angle mosaics of the Moon, like this oblique view of the fifty-eight-kilometer-wide (thirty-six-mile-wide) Murchison Crater taken by Lunar Orbiter III, launched forty-five years ago this week.

Hubble Telescope Tune-Up A little more than three years after the December 1993 repair mission that corrected its blurred vision, the Hubble Space Telescope was ready for another tune-up. In February 1997 (fifteen years ago this week), the Shuttle Discovery was launched on STS-82, the second Hubble servicing mission.

Over the course of five days, two pairs of astronauts completed five space walks and gave Hubble an extensive overhaul which included new instruments (a spectrograph, a near-infrared camera, and a spectrometer), a fine-guidance sensor, a new computer and data recorder, new electronics and covers on the magnetometer sensors, plus repairs to Hubble’s insulation which, after seven years in space, had begun to show signs of damage from collisions with micrometeoroids and other space debris.

Auroras Gone Wild The displays of slowly-shimmering lights visible at night in far northern and southern latitudes are known as the aurora borealis and aurora australis. These glowing ribbons of light occur when highly charged particles from the Sun collide with atoms high in Earth’s atmosphere. This ionization process releases photons which we see as green, brown, red, or bluish lights.

Five years ago this week, NASA launched the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) mission, a fleet of five spacecraft, to understand what causes substorms—sudden and frequent intensifications in the auroras. THEMIS discovered that substorms are triggered by magnetic reconnection, a sort of whiplash action in Earth’s magnetic field that releases trapped solar energy.

Sideways Supernova Twenty-five years ago this week, astronomers the world over witnessed the closest and brightest supernova in nearly four centuries. Known as SN1987A, this catastrophic explosion took place 170,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a nearby galaxy, and it was visible to the naked eye for nearly a year. Supernovae occur when massive stars collapse and eject most of their mass in a violent explosion.

Astronomers at the European Southern Observatory have studied the ejected matter of the SN1987A, which from Earth appears as three overlapping rings. This artist’s impression reveals the hourglass shape that SN1987A would display if we could view it from the side. Two outer rings, one inner ring, and the deformed, innermost expelled material are visible.

Hubble Upgrade The Hubble Space Telescope was designed to be regularly serviced and upgraded as new technology became available. It’s fitting, then, that the fourth servicing mission, STS-109, which was launched ten years ago this week, was undertaken by the shuttle Columbia, which itself had recently undergone nearly three years of renovations, albeit in more conventional ground-based facilities.

Seen here, astronaut James Newman moves about in Columbia’s cargo bay while working with astronaut Mike Massimino (out of frame), during the mission’s second day of extravehicular activity, which lasted over seven hours. Part of the giant telescope’s base, latched down in the payload bay, can be seen behind Newman. Upgrades to Hubble included the Advanced Camera for Surveys and new solar arrays.

A New Star in Town M51, also called the Whirlpool Galaxy, is actually a pair of colliding galaxies located about 23 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici, not far from the tip of the handle of the Big Dipper. On May 30, 2011, French observer Amédée Riou detected a supernova explosion in the Whirlpool galaxy—the second such event in just six years in M51, which is quickly earning a reputation for being a popular spawning ground for supernovae.

Known as SN2011dh, the supernova resulted from the collapse of a dying star some twelve to eighteen times as massive as the Sun. In this image of M51, taken by R. Jay GaBany on June 7, 2011, SN2001dh appears as a bright white star, located at about the two o’clock position, nestled inside the right-most spiral arm.

Southern Lights on Saturn Earth is not the only planet that experiences auroral displays (see week of February 13). This false-color composite image, constructed from sixty-five individual observations obtained by the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer on NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, shows the glow of auroras streaking out about 600 miles from the cloud tops of Saturn’s south polar region.

The colors seen here are mapped to different levels of near-infrared radiation: reflected sunlight appears blue, thermal emissions from within Saturn appear red, and the light from hydrogen ions—at the location of the aurora—is represented by green. The dark spots and banded features on Saturn are clouds and small storms that are illuminated from underneath by Saturn’s thermal emission, and thus appear in silhouette.

Rocket Pioneer Centennial Wernher von Braun, one of the most pivotal and controversial figures in modern rocketry, was born 100 years ago this week in the Prussian town of Wirsitz. In the early 1930s, after his involvement with an amateur rocket society, he began working for the German Army, ultimately developing the V-2, the world’s first ballistic missile, which Hitler hoped would turn the tide of the war.

After World War II, von Braun and many other German rocket scientists came to the United States and became the driving force behind the development of American rocket technology, which culminated in the mighty Saturn V Moon rocket, seen here on its first flight in 1967. Von Braun was the first director of NASA’s Marshall Spaceflight Center. He retired from NASA in 1972 and died in 1977.

Hubble Bubble A delicate sphere of gas, captured by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, floats serenely in the depths of space. The pristine shell, or bubble, is the result of gas that is being shocked by the expanding blast wave from a supernova. Called SNR 0509, the bubble is the visible remnant of a powerful stellar explosion in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a small galaxy about 160,000 light-years from Earth.

Ripples in the shell’s surface may be caused by either subtle variations in the density of the ambient interstellar gas, or possibly driven from the interior by pieces of the ejecta. The bubble is twenty-three light-years across and is expanding at more than 18 million kilometers (11 million miles) per hour. This Hubble image utilized the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Wide Field Imager 3.

A Matter of Truss One of the many milestones in the construction of the International Space Station was the delivery of the S0 truss segment, the backbone of the station’s 11-segment Integrated Truss Structure, which took seven years to complete. Now longer than a football field, the ITS provides pivotal attachment points for the station’s solar arrays, thermal control radiators, and external payloads.

The S0 truss segment arrived at the station during the STS-110 mission, which was launched ten years ago this week. In this image, astronaut Lee Morin, STS-110 mission specialist, is anchored to the mobile foot restraint at the end of the ISS’s Canadarm2 robot arm during the second scheduled session of extravehicular activity. Atlantis and its crew of seven remained docked at the ISS for seven days.

Mercury’s Marvelous Morphology In March 2011, MESSENGER became the first spacecraft to enter orbit around Mercury. During its first 176 days in orbit, equal to one solar day on Mercury, MESSENGER’s dual imaging system acquired over 75,000 images with both wide-angle and narrow-angle cameras. This data produced a high-resolution base map of the morphology (shape and texture) of ninety percent of the planet’s surface.

MESSENGER also collected surface color data using eight separate narrow-band color filters. This image was created by using three images acquired as part of the color base map with the wavelengths of 1000, 750, and 430 nanometers displayed in red, green, and blue, respectively. The bright rayed crater at the bottom is Snorri, 21 kilometers (13 miles) in diameter.

Rover Rides Again Apollo 16, the fifth mission to land astronauts on the Moon, and the second to feature a lunar rover, was launched forty years ago this week. After a four-day journey, astronauts John Young and Charlie Duke landed the lunar module Orion on the Moon, while crewmate Ken Mattingly remained in lunar orbit in the command module Casper. During their seventy-one hours on the Moon, Young and Duke spent over twenty hours outside Orion, and traveled about twenty-seven kilometers (seventeen miles) in the lunar rover.

Duke is seen here at Station no. 4, near Stone Mountain, during the second Apollo 16 extravehicular activity at the Descartes landing site. The gnomon, a photographic reference tool to establish local vertical Sun angle, scale, and lunar color, is visible in the foreground.

Getting a Grip on INTELSAT The first flight of the space shuttle Endeavour, launched twenty years ago this week, was a resounding success. One of the primary objectives of the STS-49 mission was to capture and repair the INTELSAT VI communications satellite, which had been stranded in a low orbit for over two years. Astronauts Gast1 Thuot and Richard Hieb made two spacewalks to try attaching a specially-designed capture bar to the slowly spinning satellite.

On their third attempt, they were joined by astronaut Tom Akers, and were able to grab the satellite using nothing more elaborate than a firm grip. After being berthed in Endeavour’s cargo bay, INTELSAT VI was outfitted with a new perigee-kick motor, which later boosted the satellite into its proper geosynchronous orbit.
